The Auckland Racing Club’s summer meeting was continued at Ellerslie today in glorious weather and before a large attendance. Several favourites were successful, although thqre were a couple of surprises. Martarma’s victory in the Great Northern Derby and King Lu’s success in the Glasgow Handicap, not being very freely anticipated. OUTSIDER WINS THE ELLERSLIE. The Ellerslie Handicap provided a great race as well as a surprise. .Singleton was a good favourite, with. War Officer second fancy and the eventual winner, Prince Lai, tlhe outsider of the field. Piet and Bold Front moved first and led for about a furlong, when Prince Lu took charge. At the half-mile Prince Lu led by two lengths from Air King and Piet, who were followed by Bold Front and Singleton. The field bunched up at the turn, Prince Lu being first into the straight from Piet, Air King, Singleton and Acushla. Any one of the six horses had a winning chance at the distance, and in a great finish Prince Lu won by half a length from Bold Front, Who finished strongly to beat The Lover by a neck. Piet was fourth, followed by Singleton, Acushla and War Officer.

EPISODE WINS MIDSUMMER. Episode was a good favourite for the Midsummer Handicap, with solid support also for The Begum and Par], Several of the outside horses failed to begin well and Catonian was badly left. The Begum found her feet quickest to lead round the turn from Episode, who was several lengths clear of Shot Silk, Winnington, Sir Russell and Pari. In the run home Episode drew out to win nicely by a length from The Begum. High Faintin’ was two and a-half lengths away third, and Shot Silk fourth. Then came Winnington, Pari, Prodice and Sir Russell. FAVOURITE AGAIN BEATEN. For the New Year’s Hurdle Race Lord Star was a strong favourite, with Sir Roseberry and Glenotus next in request. Ned Kelly was the early leader from Red Comet and Archibald.” With five furlongs covered Archibald took charge to lead past the stand from Karamu, Ned Kelly and Red Comet, who was six lengths clear of Lord Star, with Glenotus last. The field was strung but along the back, where Archibald and Karamu were several lengths clear of Red Comet and Ned Kelly (who fell at the hurdle by the six furlong post), with Lord Star and Glenotus moving up. Archibald was first into the straight from Red Comet, Glenotus and Lord Star. Archibald stayed on at the finish to win by a length from Glenotus, who defeated Red Comet by half a length. Lord Star was fourth, with the others badly beaten. Gold Rep fell at the third fence and .Sir Roseberry pulled up lame. STAR STRANGER’S GREAT WIN. The Auckland Racing Club Handicap was a great betting race, with Star Stranger, Pegaway and Mask the best backed. Cohesion took up the running quickly to lead past the stand from Papain, Royal Mint, Scat, Bennanee and Mandane, with Pegaway, Battlement and Transformer in the rear. Cohesion and Bennanee were the leaders along the back, with Seat, Papatu, Count Cavour, Mandane and Star Stranger their nearest attendants, and Pegaway moving up fast. There was some crowding as the field turned down the incline after passing the five furlong post, and Count Cavour was put on the rails and fell, also bringing down Mandane and Transformer. Cohesion was still in front at the half-mile, closely attended by Bennanee, with Papatu, Pegaway, Scat and

Star Stranger handy. Nearing the turn Bennanee headed Cohesion and Papatu, Pegaway, Star Stranger and Scat were all close up. Inside the distance Bennanee, Papatu and Pegaway were fighting hard for supremacy when Star Stranger forced his way through, finishing in great style. Star Stranger "went on to win by three-parts of a length from Papatu, who defeated Bennanee by half a length. Battlement was fourth and then in order were Pegaway, Eden Hall, Mask and Cohesion. Star Stranger finished in his best style. F. C. Porter, the rider of Count Cavour, had a leg broken. An inquiry was opened into the accident and was adjourned until to-morrow. MARTARMA WINS THE DERBY. The Great Northern Derby provided a surprise. Agrion was a hot favourite, being over three times better backed than the second choice Great Charter, while the winner, Martama, was at a good price. Satrap got left several lengths, Great Charter showing out quickly to lead past the stand from Agrion (pulling hard), Cimbaue, Laughing Prince, Thaw, In the Shade and Martama. There was not much change in the positions along the back and with a mile covered Great Charter still led Agrion, Laughing Prince and Cimabue. At this stage Martama and Satrap rushed up on the outside of the field and at the turn Great Charter just led Agrion, Martama, Laughing Prince and Satrap. Agrion took charge below the distance and was immediately challenged by Martama and Laughing Prince. Martama gradually forged ahead and won by a length from Laughing Prince, Agrion being two and ahalf lengths away third. Great Charter was fourth, followed by In the Shade and Cimabue. SECOND FAVOURITE SCORES. Paper Boy was the popular selection for the County Handicap, being fBOO better backed than The Immigrant. Ripon Abbey began quickly and led along the back from The Immigrant, King Arch, Winsome Boy, Baby Bun, Paper Boy and Carinthia, rhe Immigrant, and Ripon Abbey were first into Thb _str sight several lengths clear oi King Ar eh,"¥>’lnsome Boy and Paper Boy. The Immigrant held his own at the finish to win by three parts of a length from Paper Boy, who beat King Arch by half a head. Winsome Boy was fourth and then came Antrim Boy, Baby Bun, Quinsilia and Bombarder. AUSSIE LANDS THE NEWMARKET. There was a good pool in the Newmarket Handicap for which Aussie was a strong favourite with Money Order and Nancy Lee also solidly backed. Aussie and Nancy Lee moved first and showed the way through the cutting to Prince Otto, Silvermine, Town Guard and Money Order? This order was maintained into the straight and Nancy Lee was slightly in front of Aussie inside the distance with Silvermine and Money Order challenging. Aussie did best over the last little bit and scored by half a length from Nancy Lee with Silvermine a similar distance away third. Money Order was fourth and then came town Guard, Receipt and Prince Otto. The winner was cleverlj handled by A. Tinker. KING LU’S SURPRISE WIN. There was heavy wagering on the Glasgow Handicap, Paperchase, the Le Choucas Ti Tree bracket and Royal Damon receiving most support. Day Guard found his feet quickly and made play along the back from Ti Tree, Paperchase, Araheno, Royal Damon and King Lu. Passing the five furlong post King Lu moved up fast and took charge at the cutting to lead into the straight closely attended by Paperchase, who was followed by Ti Tree, Royal Damon, Archeno and Day Guard. In a good finish King Lu won by three parts of a length from Paperchase, with Sir Archie two lengths away third. Archeno was fourth, succeeded by Royal Damon, Day Guard and Centrepiece.

THE RACING DESCRIBED. FIVE FAVOURITES SCORE. (By Wire Special from “Moturoa.”) Marton, Last Night. The Marton summer meeting commenced in glorious weather to-day, with a large attendance. Favourites won five, races. The Marton Cup was an exhibition of rough riding in which Stormy won by a short head from Henna after getting a bad passage. The open sprint saw an outsider in Dobbin romp home from the short-priced Vast Acre. First Sight was backed down to a very short price for the Trial Plate, with Le Champ next in demand. The favourite delayed the start, but from a good dispatch Lethal was first to show out from Le Champ, Corbel, Plane and Red Bank. At the half-mile First Sight had run up to third behind Lethal and Le Champ, and the trio entered the straight well clear of Plane and Discourse, First Sight had to be hard ridden to come up to l.ethal at the distance, but at the finish was going away to win by two lengths, with three-quarters of a length to Le Champ. Further back came Plane, Ironic. Discourse and Red Bank. POWHIRI BY A NOSE. Six lined up for the Hack Hurdles, in which Powhiri was very heavily backed, with a big drop to Elysianor and San Pedro. Elysianor was first to move from Powhiri and Kilburn, but the favourite was first over the initial obstacle from Elysianor, Mister Gamp and Kilburn. Passing the stands Powhiri was bowling along just in front of Elysianor and Mister Gamp, with Blue Peter and San Pedro last. At the six furlongs peg Mister Gamp and Powhiri were on terms, followed by Kilburn, Elysianor and Blue Peter, but at the jump at the half-mile Mister Camp hit hard and dropped back. Alan McDonald began to ride Powhiri on the home bend and over the last fencee Elysianor and Kilburn challenged. At the distance Elysianor was a good half length, in front and appeared to have the race well in hand, but Powhiri came again to get the verdict by the barest of noses, with Kilburn half a length away. Mister Gamp was fourth, with

San Pedro last. Kilburn was going well at the finish and may do better to-day. BRIAR ROOT WINS EASILY. Five lined up for the Juvenile and Briar Root and Arikiwai carried twothirds of the totalisator investments. Briar Root was first to move, but vthen the field settled down Consent was showing the way to Briar Root, Fee Simple and Arikiwai. Turning into the straight Briar Root ran past Consent and won easily by two lengths from Fee Simple, which, was two lengths in front of Arikiwai, with Consent close up. Arikiwai did not seem to get going, but made up a lot of ground at the finish. Briar Root W'as a class above the rest and won very easily. TROUBLE IN THE CUP. The scratching pen was in eUJ-iv? ' the Marton Cup, the field being reduecu from 18 to 7. In a good pool Stormy was installed prime fancy, carrying 888 tickets more than Euphonium, with a drop to Novar. From a good start Stormy and Avro were first to move but, passing the stands, Assurance was showing the way to Avro, Stormy, Euphonium, Cool Card, Novar and Henna. Avro, on the rails, and Assurance were together on the bend but, turning into the back stretch, Assurance shot over to the rails, upsetting Avro, Stormy and Euphonium. When the field settled down again Assurance was showing the way to Avro, Euphonium and Stormy moving up from last. Coming into the straight Stormy moved up to Assurance, with Henna coming on the outside. At the distance Henna challenged the favourite, which was better ridden in a great finish to win by a head, with Assurance half a length back. Close up were Avro, Euphonium, Novar and Cool Card. Stormy (net with a bad passage and would have been unlucky to lose, but Henna could have been better handled over the final stages. Henna finished gamely and should win a fair middle distance race before long. G. Humphries, the rider of Assurance, was suspended for three months for deliberate crossing, and Avro was placed third and Assurance fourth. BROAD ACRE'S VICTORY. Broad Acre was odds on for the Dash Hack. White Ringlet was quickest on the hop out from Broad Acre and Abbess. At the half-mile "White Ringlet was well clear of Abbess, Broad Acre, Rising Star and Tanagra. Turning on to the home bend the favourite ran up to second and on reaching the straight collared White Ringlet and went away to win with ridiculous ease by five lengths. In a good finish for second place there were heads between Abbess, Rising Star, Tanagra and White Ringlet. Mon Mint gave a rodeo exhibition when the tapes went up and took no part in the race. DOBBIN CAUSES SURPRISE.

The Railway Handicap saw Vast Acre and Arrow Lad carrying well over half the investments. From a good start Standard and Arrow Lad were first to show up, but at the end of a furlong Vast Acre had taken the lead, closely attended by Arrow Lad, with Dobbin and New Moon next. Coming into the straight Arrow Lad was up to the favourite and at the distance Dobbin challenged, getting up between the leaders to win comfortably by a length. Arrow Lad appeared to beat Vast Acre for second place and may make amends before the meeting is over. New Moon was fourth, with Standard a bad last. HOYLAKE BEATS 1 .. . OI’IUTE. Some Lad was the elect of backers in the New Year Hack Handicap, carrying 498 tickets more than Hoylake. Some Lad was first away from Royal Elm and Shining Star, the latter running up to second on the bend, but stumbling and falling back to last. At the five furlong peg Some Lad was six lengths clear of Royal Elm, Lieutenant Bill and Hoylake, the latter moving up on the home bend. Coming into the straight, Hoylake caught life favourite, but had to be ridden out to win by half a length, with the fast finishing Lieutenant Bill half a length further back. Royal Elm was a poor fourth. WHENUANUI FINISHES WELL. In the best betting race of the day Polar wound up better fancied than Wanderlust, with a big drop to Whenuanui. Beaumont was first to show out from Polar, Olympic, Wanderlust and Wlienuanui, but at the half-mile Whenuanui was well clear of Olympic and Polar. On the bend Wanderlust had moved up to second place, and with Polar challenged the Wanganui gelding, who finished better to win by half a length from Wanderlust, with Polar a neck away. Superb King was fourth, with Beaumont and Brigadier Bill next.
