NEW TENNIS CLUB FORMED.

TWO HARD COURTS AVAILABLE. With the completion of two first-class hard courts at the school, a committee comprising Messrs. F. A. Bates (Hawera Main School), D. Burgess and J. Kirkpatrick (Park Club) and R. Syme and M. R. Jones (Hawera Club) has been appointed to control the newly-formed hard court club at the Hawera Main School. Mr. Jones has been appointed secretary pro tern. The idea of the club is to supplement the grass courts and to provide' practice for players when the greens are not playable. It has been, decided that the subserip tions will be 10s for six- months for members of local clubs, while for o’d pupils of the school half fees areeharged. Players not belonging to any local club will be chatged 15s. SCOUTS’ FIELD DAY. On Labour Day it is anticipated that fully 200 Scouts, representing seven troops in South Taranaki,, will assemble at King Edward Park for a big field day. it has been arranged that in the event of wet weather the gathering will be held in the Winter Show Buildings, winch have been placed at the disposal of the scouts by the show committee. Tiie following judges and officials have been appointed for the competitions: Bridge building, Mr. A. K. Tyson; ambalance, Mr. Sheppherd; tent-pitching, Mr. A. K. Fyson: patrol marching. Mr. W. Adams; time-keepers, Messrs. I. J. Bridger and F. Vincent (Eitliam); secretary for the day, Mr. R. A. Richton(Mokoia); starter. Mr. J. A. Dalgetty. “RENT DAY” FOR MAORIS. There was a generous pilgrimage of Maoris from the surrounding district to Haweia on Saturday, when the halfyearly payment of native rents was made by Messrs. C. J. Jacobs and W. Ngaharana. On Monday the officers will distribute I the half-yearly rents to the Maoris at Waitara. SCOUT BANQUET AT NORMANEY. The first banquet of the Normanby troop of Bey Scouts was held in the Normanby Horticultural Hall last week, when there were about 50 Scouts and parents present, including Messrs. W. Bennett, chairman of the Normanby Committee, the Rev. Fletcher, Messrs. I Don Stewart, A. Hill, Scoutmaster C. Hitchcock (Hawera Cubs), Assistant Scoutmaster G. Landers (Mokoia troop), Scoutmaster N. Cowie (Hawera) and Miss I. Antrobus (cub-mistress, Normanby). The hall was very effectively decorated with ferns and greenery by the local scouts. Bennett referred to the Scout movement as one that would raise the tone of any community.

During the evening a programme of songs, musical items and sketches was given by the Scouts, assisted by MissM. Peddie and Mr. A. Galloway. Games were also played, the parents and others present joining in. The programme concluded with the dispensing of supper by Meedames Antrobus, Slinger, Tippett, Thacker and Miss Antrobus.
