Mr. L. R. Jones, of Awakino, is on & visit to New Plymouth. Mr. George Ramson, of Whakatane, is visiting New Plymouth.
Dr. Elizabeth Gunn, medical officer of schools, is visiting New Plymouth, and is staying at the White Hart hotel, Mr. R. W, Carpenter, who Is now in business in Waipukurau, and who over twenty year* ago was a member of the Taranaki Herald literary staff. Is on a short visit to New Plymouth. A passenger by the Ulimaroa front Wellington for Sydney on Friday was Archbishop Redwood, who is journeying to Perth and Adelaide to be present at the laying of the foundation stoned of the new cathedrals to be erected in those cities. The Archbishop will be away five weeks.
The death is reported from OpotikJ of Alfred Parkinson, Maori War veteran and pioneer settler of Onotikl, aged M. He arrived in N?w Zealand nearly 68 years ago, coming to Opotiki i 1868, He saw 30 years’ service, in the Opotiki Volunteer- Rangers and Constabulary and received the King’s Badge and the New Zealand Medal. He was created a King’s Empire Veteran. —Press Assn. Captain George Thomas Carlisle Par, ker Swabey, D. 5.0., who is to succeed Commodore Beal in the command of the New Zealand Division of the Royal Navy, was born in 18®1. He Is a eofl of the late Mr. Thomas Swabey, of Woodeote, Woburn Sands. He married Miss Lois Mary Elsa, daughter of Mr, S. F. Ridley, of West Kensington, Lon* don. Captain Swabey entered the Navy in 1894 and was promoted lieutenant in 1901, commander in 1913 and captain in 19118. He served in the Dardanelles, 1915-16, as naval observation officer and was mentioned in despatches.
