LEGION OF FRONTIERSMEN.
The Legion being strictly a non-poli-tical body, had great difficulty in making an opportunity to welcome Comrade J. G. Coates, who is also a South African Veteran, when he passed through this district just before the election. However, it was managed, and both at New Plymouth and Hawera he made time, at some inconvenience to hinuself, to deliver a short address to the comrades present. He pointed out the value of ’the legion to the members themselves, to the country and to-tiie Empire, the good work done by the legion at various times, and the fact that so many members were men that had seen active service made them a body that would be useful at “short call.' At present are to be seen in Mr. Pearce’s window, Devon Street, the shooting trophies at present held by Squadron L. The memorial and D'Esterre Cups are competed for by all the squadrons of the legion in New Zealand, and were Avon last year by Squadron L. The other cups are for competition by members of Squadron L only. Comrade Brunton has presented Squadron L with a trophy to be chot for on miniature ranges, and already five troops have established miniature ranges, so the ( oompetition will be keen. At present, . headquarters are endeavouring to form a new troop at Taihape, and, if successful, there is a possibility of the troops in the district from there to Marton developing into a squadron. Paritutu Troops have just held their annual meeting, when Comrade C. T. Morton was elected troop leader, Comrade Brown sergeant for the ensuing vear, and Comrade. Glendinning corporal.
