GOLF.
Can it be so? ’Tis rumoured that the following notice was put up in a New Zealand golf club: "Members and. visitors are asked to refrain from picking up lost balls until they have stopped rolling.” A remarkable golfing feat has been accomplished near Winnipeg, in Canada. Hugh Fletcher, the professional of a golf club, teed off in front of the leading newspaper office, and proceeded to play through city streets, out into the country. over gravel roads, and across pastures and ploughed fields in the direction of the 18th hole of the Winnipeg Golf Club’s course (says an exchange). Walking 17} miles, he reached this goal in 74 hours, with 252 strokes to his credit, which was substantially below , the lowest estimate made of his probable score. He encountered every possible kind of shot, and, strange to relate, finished with the .same ball as he began with. The American golf ba/1 has been rejected and despised by the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of England. The proposal came fro’j the Rules of Golf Committee: “That (he Championship Committee be /eqnested to announce that in the amateur and open championships of 1926, only balls measuring not les* than 1.6’8 inches in diameter and weighing not more than 1.55 ounces shall be played.” This was rejected. A large majority of the members found themselves unable to accept the proposal on the ground that the championships are held in order to select the I champions of. the game as ordinarily ‘ played and that the championships i should not be u*cd for the purposes of ’experiments. The meeting voted its | thanks to the Golf Ball Sub-Committee ! and expressed the hope that it would ' continue its investigations in conjunc- ; tion with the Implements Committee of ’the United States Golf Association.
