TARANAKI ON TOUR. WAIRARAPA MATCH TO-DAY. SEVERAL PLAYERS INJURED; (By Wire—Special Reporter.) Carterton, Laet Night. The Taranaki representative teanA arrived in Wellington early this morning after a splendid trip across from Nelson. They left by the afternoon train for Carterton, where they arrived about 8 p.m. Mr. E. McKenzie and several other members of the Walrarapa Rugby Unioh met them on arrival. There is every prospect of fine weather for the match to-morrow. Wairarapa will be represented by practically the same combination that was defeated by Hawke’s Bay, so in view of the Ranfurly Shield match on Saturday the result will be awaited with interest. Several of Taranaki’s players have suffered from minor injuries. All are doing well, though it is doubtful if Petty and Paterson will be able to play again on the tour. Johnston may be unable to play. NEW SOUTH WALES TEAM. CIVIC WELCOME AT WELLINGTON. By Telegraph.—-Press Association. Wellington, Toast Night. To-day a civic welcome was accorded the New South Wales Rugby footballers, while the Mayor (Mr. C. J. B. Nor. wood) also extended a welcome to the nu mbers of the north and south Maori teams, who contest the Mori ‘bowl td< morrow. The Mayor expressed extreme pleasure in welcoming a representative team from the other side of the Tasinan, He said the cultivation of a reciprocal feeling between the young men of New? Zealand and Australia should be encoui. aged in every possible way. He regret* ted that no provision had been made fof the team to play at Wellington, but he wished them a pleasant tour. Colonel Campbell and councillors also spoke. Mr. Harold Baker, manager- of the team, thanked the speakers for the web come. Incidentally he said Rugby wa( almost a religion in New Zealand. MATCH AT URENUI. Our Urenui correspondent writes i—• The first junior grade football com* petition, as far as Urenui Is concerned, was brought to a conclusion on Satuf. day last, when the local team were dp* fcated by Tukapa by 5 points to nil, There was a large number of supported of both teams present, and it was anti* cipated that a close tussle would ensue. Although undoubtedly-the best team on the day won, Urenui were by no mean! disgraced, and want of practice was nd doubt in a great measure one of the reasons for their defeat. In the first spell matters were fairly even, no score rd* suiting on either side, but in the second, just before the whistle blew, Tukapd managed to cross the line, the try being converted. Mr. Hughes controlled ths game, and hie decisions were prompt and impartial, giving general satiefafi* tion. There were several knoek-ouM during the course of play, and E. K.
