STRATFORD NEWS.
THE PROGRESS LEAGUE. MONTHLY MEETING. AIDUNTAIN ROAD DEVIATIONS. (From Our Own Reporter.) Stratford, Aug. 18. The monthly meeting of the Stratford Progress League was held to-night. Present; Aiessrs J. G. Nichol (chairman), N. 11. Afoss, J. MoKee, R. V. Kay, W. S. Coombridge, S. Ward, C. R. Finnerty, D. 'M. Clarke and R. H. White. In connection with t'he proposed deviation of the Mountain Road between Waipuku and Inglewood, the clerk of the Inglewood County Council wrote thanking the league for their activities in the matter It was pointed-out that so much time and correspondence had been devoted to this matter that everything of importance- from all angles had been said, and they could only “mark time” and await developments. For this reason it was encouraging to know that their neighbours were prepared. to impress upon the authorities the outsiders’ viewpoints and thereby leave no stone unturned. Their concern was to reconstruct that section of highway without delay, or suffer irretrievable losses in the struggle of maintenance of a worn-out road. Instead of a decrease in heavy traffic a serious increase was observed owing to the developments of the port,, centralisation at Stratford and increases locally, necessitating immediate aetion on the part of the council to keep abreast of things. The-deviation in question was a most Important one, and was rendered more urgent by the fact that there was no eide road or by-way to relieve the main road. The letter concluded with thanks to the league for making a study of the problem, and expressed a hope that the matter of a deviation would be settled before next summer. The letter was received. In connection with the same matter, Mr. R. Masters, M.P., to whom representations. connected with the deviation proposals were made, forwarded a letter from the Minister for Public Works (Hon. J. G. Coates) to the effect that the suggestions would have every consideration by the Highways Board, and the league would be advised further in due course,
It was decided to- support the east committee of the Egmont National Park Board in its efforts to raise funds to put the Stratford track in order. Messrs 11. E. Abraham and E. C. A. Gaw were elected new members.
