RACING CARNIVAL

CHRISTMAS MEETINGS. SEVERAL BIG GATHERINGS. PROSPECTS DISCUSSED, (Notes by “Moturoa.”J On Boxing Day there will be radAa at New Plymouth, Auckland, Palmerston, • Duneaiii, Waipukurau, Kaikoura, Hokitika and a numuer of minor places, but, judging by the weather experienced througuouL the Dominion recently, conditions will be anytMing but those expected at this time of .the year. Summer, lox . the nonce, apjfears ?to have gone, and in place oi sunshine and hard iracks due may expect showers’and mud thi* year. Wiui satisfactory fields carded- all round this is a pity, but sportsmen are uvi easily deterred when their tavourite pastime i* ”on tap,” and one can only nope that racing will be tip-top, and winners eusy to sort out. Ar. the same time the writer takes the opportunity ol neartily reciprocating-the good wishes or sporting friends and . acquaintances, and wishes one and all a very happy Christmas, and the best of luck at tuc lioiiilay meetings. TARANAKI MEETING; Taranaki sports are promised excellent racing during the- holidays. The acceptances received for the opening day or the Taranaki Christina* meeting are particularly good, amt augur \veii ror Hie success of this and me Stratford meeting at New Year. In the Christmas Handicap at New Plymouth eleven horses have been paid up for out of* twelve entered, and in the Flying Handicap twelve out of seventeen remain in. Tne minor event* Jiave all filled weH, u pleasing feature being an, acceptance of eleven in the- Runviu Hurdles. As usual, the best hack* iri the’ province figtrre in the minor flat rftces. The northerners, Tinokalia Abbey Bell,, . have beep accepted "tor in both the distance and sprint events at the Taranaki meeting, but, on the whole, owners have made their intentions fairly plum, and scratchings should be few. The Christmas Handicap appears to be as open a* evei, Tinokaha, Euepre, The Bunker, Giengariff and others having admirers. Rational, Orchid, Yoma, Big Push, Hori and other smart sprinters remain in the Flying Handicap, and the race promises to be one of the best at the meeting.

Solferange has bpen allowed to drop out of New Plymouth engagements, and has gone to Awapuni w'ith other members ot O. Cox’s team. The Hawera trainer has Lady Bentinck, Solferange and Euphonium engaged there on Boxing Day.

Master Sandstone is another to take on the Manawatu meeting in preference to Taranaki. Star Area is in the same category, but on the other hand The Banker has been paid up for New Plymouth and scratched for Awapuui.

The Manawatu Cup field has been reduced to eight. Sunart has many friends, but sohie people pretend to like Avola and Te Kuri for the thousand j>ounder. ELLERSLIE PROSPECTS. But greater still was falling-oiA ot- hor»vs engaged in the Auckland Uuj uiid Railway ilandicap/ Only fifteen have been paid up for in the Cup, and die Railway field now number* twentyuno. Runnymede, King’s Speech and Hyd< Park will probably measure strides ir the Great Northern foal Stakes or Boxing Day. Ail three are smart, but Hyde Park may see out . the “six” bet<.er than his opponents. The Great -Northern Derby will see Count Cavour and Inferno ngi(tmg out their Derby battle again, but if an they «>ay about Killochra is correct they may find him a tough one to settle. Tarleton has been withdrawn from the Auckland Cup, and will take on th® Christina* Handicap, run over a favourable distance —one mile. The much-boomed hunter Bullford has uis full share of weight (IL2) in the Grafton Hurdles at Ellerslie, but they «ay that Santiago is absolutely no use to him on the cracks at Awapuni. Lady Cavendish has been pdlled out of the Nursery Handicap at. Awapuni, her owner evidently' hot relisning the idea 6f conceding : 121b*. to la smart youngster like Lucinius. The )a|ter goes very fast. On the - occasion of his j)revipus visit ’to Auckland 'Glehross let a big army of admirers down with a thud,; but the Fordell horse may make amends this time. Muraahi still claims a number of friend* amongst Taranaki punters, but if he wins that Auckland Cup we hear so much about—then form has got this scribe beaten! HAWKE’S BAY MEETING.
