Mr. P. A. Tunbridge, of the New Plymouth railway .staff, has been promoted to the position of stationmaster at Whangamomona. Mr. W. H. Anderson, postma*ter at Eltham, has received notice of his transfer, on promotion, to Invercargill, as senior supervisor of the telegraph*. The death of Mr. J. W. Billson, a member of the Australian Legislative Assembly and formerly deputy-leader of the Labour Party, is reported in a Melbourne cubic.

Mr. Justice Stringer and Mrs. Stringer will arrive in Eltham to-night on a holiday visit to their son, Dr. iStringer, before leaving on a trip to the Old Country.,

Dr. Cedric Hicks, late of Dunedin, has accepted the post of chemical physiologist on the research staff of the' Mayo Foundation, Rochester, United States (says a London cable).

The death is reported from London of Sir George Buchanan, aged 70. Sir George held appointments at most of the British Embassies in Europe and was Ambassador to Petrograd from 1910 to 1918. We wrote an account of his experience in Russia during the war, which was published last year. Many old residents will learn with regret of the death of Mr. Jo)in Dickson, which occurred at his late residence, Little Waihi Road., near the racecourse, on Sunday evening (says the Hawera Star). The deceased gentleman had been a semi-invalid for three year*, and his death was not unexpected. He came to New Zealand in the ship Belgravia 59 years ago. Some time later on he went to Pihama, where he engaged in dairy farming, retiring four years ago, and going to reside in Hawera. The death of Dr. # W. R. Pear Jess, aged seventy, is announced in a Nelson telegram. The deceased served throughout the South African war and the Great War with the rank of LieutenantColonel. He did fine work on Gallipoli in caring for the wounded, and will be remembered by many. General Richardson, during his visit to Nelson some time ago, referred to Dr. Pearless as “that grand old veteran.” Deceased in the early days took a keen interest in the volunteer movement, and was also a prominent figure in sporting circles.
