LACK OF CLERGY.
THE CAUSES EXAMINED. By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright. London, March 9. The Bishop of Durham (Dr. H. H. Henson), ascribes the shortage of clergy firstly, to the fact that the classes whence many excellent clergy were drawn are tending towards sterility; secondly, the movement towards clerical celibacy; thirdly, the uncertainty regarding the conditions of the ministry and the dread of clerical poverty; fourthly, the intellectual difficulties. He joints out that the classes which were accustomed to keep their sons at school until 23 or 24 are being replaced by classes expecting their sons to earn their own living at 16 or 18.
