STRANGE MURDER.

A YOUTH IN CUSTODY. ELDERLY MAN SHOT DEAD. ALLEGED ADMISSION MADE. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Ashburton, Last Albert Frederick Maxwell Kissell, ?? -u 1?’ a Pl° u ghman, employed by David Little, near Coldstream, 25 miles south of Ashburton, was arrested this afternoon and charged with the murder of James Henry Suring McKenzie, aged o, the caretaker at the homestead of John Studholm, on the Coldstream estate. It is alleged accused killed deceased by a rifle shot. Kissell, who belongs to Loburn, North Canterbury, is a well-built lad. It is believed deceased came from Lyttelton, and that he worked for some time on Quail Island. Particulars to hand show that Kissel went to work as usual this morning, and after working for some hours he mentioned to his employer that he had shot McKenzie the-previous night. A visit to the homestead was made, and McKenzie was found lying dead on the floor in his pyjamas, shot through the chest with a 44 bore sporting rifle. Kissel said he did not know why he shot him. It is understood they had been friendly, Kissel frequently spending evenings with McKenzie after work. The police believe Kissel suffered from delusions. The body has been brought to the morgue and arrangements made for an inquest and post-mortem. Accused will come before the Court to-morrow, when a remand will be asked for eight days to enable accused to be kept under observation.
