RELIEF FOR UNEMPLOYED. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Christchurch, June 12. The City Council voted £5OO for therelief of unemployment. It was decided to spend the money on city reserves. A LENGTHY SITTING. Christchurch, June 12. The Christchurch City Council rose at 3.10 this morning after an all-night stonewall by Labor members on the proposal that the council wages and bonuses should be those fixed by the Arbitration Court. The final division on this subject was reached at 2.30 a.m., when the clause was adopted by nine votes to six. TENDERS FOR WOOLLEN MILLS. Wanganui, June 12. Eight tenders have been received for the erection of the Wanganui woollen mills. The directors to-day accepted A. G. Bignell’s tender of £25,825. COMMUNICATION RESTORED. Christchurch, June 12. The through service from Christchurch to Blenheim has been resumed from both ends, the Public Works Department having provided a punt at the Clarence Rive , where t,he restoration of the bridge will take at least six months.
OTAGO CLIMATE. Dunedin, June 12. At the pre-sessional meeting of Otago M.P.’s with the Expansion League, Mr. Todd, the president, blamed the Govern ment for failing to advertise the scenic v/onders of Otago, and tourists’ agents for frightening visitors with tales of the freezing south. On the coldest day in Queenstown it was 42 deg,; in Rotorua it was 44.8 deg. The mean temperature at Rotorua was 55.6 deg., and at Queenstown 50.1 deg. In all the literature issued by the Government he would like to see the world “cold” lakes obliterated. They should be called sunshine lakes, because there was more sunshine in Cen tral Otago than anywhere else in New Zealand.
