At yesterday’s meeting of the Egmont County Council, the inspector of health (Mr.F. Swindells) notified that for the quarter ending March 31 three cases of infectious disease were notified within the Egmont County, two beiijg diptheria and one pneumonia, all of which were removed to hospital for treatment. This showed a reduction of two over the corresponding period of last year. Taken on a population basis the cases were at the rate of 1.02 per 1000, and were 9.37 per cent of the total cases in the Taranaki hospital district during the period. Supplies of Auckland oysters are coming to hand very slowly this season. New Plymouth fishmongers report that the quantities they have received since the season opened on June 1 have been quite insufficient to meet the local demand. The only reason they can attribute for this is that the demand in Auckland must be exceptionally keen this season and that the bulk of the oysters obtained are required to satisfy that demand. In quality this year’s oysters are larger and more tasty, one fishmonger stating that they are better than has been the case for some years past. A departure has been made in the method of forwarding supplies from ~nd, consignments now coming to New Plymouth by rail instead of by boat as formerly. This makes no difference to the oysters, which, in contrast to the Stewart Island product, will keep for a fortnight without the shells opening. Prices are the same as for last season.
