Mr. J. N. Gamlin, of New Plymouth and formerly of Kaupokonui, where he i esided for a great many years, is seriously ill. Mr. S. G. Smith, M.P., left for Wellington by the mail train yesterday, to attend the session of Parliament, which opens to-morrow

The health of the Very Rev. Dean Tom M‘Kenna, of New Plymouth, is such as to cause his friends anxiety. His brother, the Right Rev. Monsignor M‘Kenna, is with him. Mr. S. ! G. Smith, M.P., tendered his resignation as a member of the New Plymouth Technical College Board of Managers last night, owing to pressure of his Parliamentary and other duties. A resolution expressing appreciation of Mr. Smith’s services was carried. His place on the board has been taken by Mr. R. J. Deare. Mr. Arthur Dickson, who was a pupil of the New Plymouth Technical College last year, has been awarded an engineering bursary valued at £5O. He matriculated last year and also passed the engineering preliminary examination and is now continuing his studies at the Canterbury College of Engineering. The Board of Managers extended their congratulations to Mr. Dickson last night. The death occurred at' Auckland yesterday of Mr. Thomas H. Nicholson, a former resident- of Waverley and New Plymouth. He was engaged in farming pursuits in the Waverley district for many years, subsequently retiring to New Plymouth, and latterly to Auckland. He was in his 71st year. He leaves a widow, who is in very poor health, and a son is Mr. J. C. Nicholson, the well-known New Plymouth solicitor. The death occurred in New Plymouth on ‘Sunday evening of one of New Plymouth’s oldest identities in the person of Mr. Daniel Power. Deceased arrived in the Dominion in December, 1874, and was employed nt Vivian’s foundry for some years’ Later he joined the Harbor Board' staff, and for the last 33 years he was in business on his own account as a gun and locksmith. Failing health compelled him to relinquish the business about two years ago. Deceased was well known and highly respected., Mrs. Power died some years ago, the only surviving member of the family being Mrs. F. R. Duller.
