THE EMPIRE. "ON OUR SELECTION," SATURDAY. The greatest care lias been taken, and record expense incurred, it is claimed, in the production of Steele. Rudd's "On Our Selection," for E. .). Carroll bv Raymond 'Longford, which is to be shown •at the Empire Theatre, for to-night and one matinee, commencing on Saturday next, at 2 p.m. An Australian himself, Mr,' Longford lias had considerable experience in bush life, and knows the kind of people thai: Steele Hudd wrote about. He has lived with them and understands the real difficulties that beset them and their early efforts to wrest a living from the virgin soil. He knows the kind of makeshift, house they live in, the kind of clothes they wear. lie knows their manners and lack of them. He has seen the horrors of a drought, and understands the tremendous amount of work entailed in clearing and burning off dense scrub and heavy timber in order to plant the scanty crop. More important than all, he has the true Australian love for his country, and consequently objects strongly to seeing the characters which are presented to the public as natural types turned into ridicule. This has been done frequently on both the sta"c and on the screen." All this has been studiously avoided in "On Our Selection.'' They are real people performing real work, and the humorous episodes which provide anything from a quiet smile to uproarious laughter, fit naturally into the story, and are more mirthprovoking from the very atmosphere of actuality associated with them.
