A MISSING CORPSE. By Telefraph—rJeas Association Napier, Nov. 17. It is not often that a coffin containing a corpse is Teported missing, but such an incident has been brought under the notice of the Napier police. A week ago a young man was drowned on a station property at Tolaga Bay. After the inquest the relatives, who reside in Dunedin, made arrangements to have the body buried. Accordingly it, was placed in .a. lead-lined casket and put on tinManiroa at Gisbovne last Friday, but so far relatives have not seen nor heard anything more of the body or coffin. The relatives are greatly perturbed. Napier, Last Night.

Matters in connection with the body of a man in a coffin supposed to have gone astray between Napier and Gisborne have been cleared up. Advice has been received by the, police that the coffin was carried over various stages of the journey by rail and sea and duly delivered to the undertaker to whom it was consigned, but apparently the undertaker concerned failed to notify the relations of the arrival of the "coffin, hence the enquiries instituted on Tuesday.

TRAINING MORE TEACHERS. Wellington, Last Night. The Minister for Education is in communication with the training colleges regarding the proposed 50 per cent, increase in the number of new students next year. This increase is part of the effort that the Education Department is making to overcome the shortage of qualified teachers. The scheme will involve the use of temporary quarters at Auckland and some other centres where the present accommodation is inadequate. A HYDRO ELECTRIC SCHEME. Tanmarunui, Last Night. The- Borough Council, at a meeting last night, received Messrs. Hay and Viekerman's reports on the four hydroelectric power and lighting schemw in the Wanganui and Whakapapa .rivers. It was resolved to adopt the Wanganui No. 1 proposal, to cost £44,000. A poll of ratepayers would he taken at the earliest moment to sanction the loan. The site is half a mile from Piriaka on the Main Trunk. PROPORTIONAL REPRESENTATION. Westport, Last Night. At a meeting of the Westport Borough Council to-night, it was resolved, with one dissentient, that the election for borough councillors and borough members of the Hospital and Charitable Aid Board of ordinary borough elections in future be held under the proportional representation system. WATERSTDERS' PAY. Wellington, Last Night. A conference between representatives of the waterside workers and of the employers of waterside labor sat in Wellington to-day and will meet again. The present waterside agreement does not expire until the end of next year, but the unions are asking that it shall be reviewed in the light of the increase in the cost of living. APPEAL FOR STARVING CHILDREN OF EUROPE. Welington, Nov. 17. Reference to the collection of funds for starving children in Europe was made at, the civic reception to Sir Thos. Mackenzie to-day, when the Mayor asked Sir T. Mackenzie's opinion on the question. Sir Thomas replied that New Zealand had sent too many funds away and had contributed out of proportion to her size, in fact of every pound raised for Belgium New Zealand had contributed 12s fid. Charity began at home. There were a great many starving children in London, and before he would give much to the children of those who would have enslaved us he would first see that every mouth in the Dominions and the Homeland was filled. !

A JEWELLER'S SHOP ROBBED. Hamilton, Nov. 17. A large piere was cut out" of the window of Pascoe's jewellery shop last night and a few articles removed. Another window was scratched. It will be necessary to replace both. Several other windows in business promises premises wore badly scratched.

MURDER CHARGES. Christchurch, Nov. 17. Frederick C. Mallaquin appeared in the Magistrate's Court this morning charged with having on November 7 attempted to murder his wife by firing a revolver at her. ' On the application of the police the ease was remanded until November 2-1, bail being allowed the accused in £fioo, or two sureties of £2;)0 each. Auckland, Nov 17. At the inquest on Nora. Ami Spearpoint, Mr. Poynton, S.'M., coroner, found a verdict that deceased died from wounds inflicted on the head, probably by the axe, which was produced, but there was no evidence brought to show by whom the axe was used. Frederick Spent-point, son of the deceased, was subsequently charged with 'the murder of his mother, and was remanded till, next Wednesday.

P.P.A. SUED BY ORGANISER. Wellfnpton, Nov. 17 Ernest A. Evans, of Wellington, late secretary of the P.P.A., Christclmrcli, sued the association for £25, 'the cost of moving his family and furniture from Wellington to Christclmrcli. The plaintiff's evidence was that he was engaged as organiser for Christclmrcli in January. 101!), but resigned in the following October because the association was unable to pay hiin. A special canvass was made, but the bulk of the money went to Wellington. In n letter writton by the Rev. Howard Elliott to the Cliristchurtfi executive there was a footnote recommending the Ohristclvureh. division to pay his removal expenses. The Rev. Mr. Elliott, for the defence, said that there was no arrangement to pay removal expenses. The question was never raised. Evans was anxious to go fo Christclmrcli. He could not recollect writing the footnote. The case was adjourned for the production of the letter.
