BOXING.
THE STRATFOBD TOURNAMENT. •liidging by (lie large number of applications already being made for seats at the boxing tournament to be held by tbe Stratford Sports and Pastimes Club in tbe Town Hall, on Show night, Wednesday, Norember 11, the programme has evidently hit tho popular taste. In addition to the fight between tho two professionals, Kutherford and Witney, the following first-class amateur bouts hare been arranged: Heavy, McAsey (Stratford) v. Whittaker (Palmerston North); middle, Canute (Stratford) t. Davis (Palmerston North); welter, Clarry (Eltham) v. Duggan (Havtera); light, Cadman (Hatrcra) v. Coombs (Oaonui); feather, Skilgiund (Stratford) r/. Budding (Stratford). The box plan is stil lopen at Grubb's music shop and patrons are advised to book early as the best seats are fast being written off. The Mayor of Stratford is endeavouring to secure the attendance of his Excellency tho Governor-General (Lord jellicoc) at the tournament. The Association has received a latter from Carl Callaway, ot Wellington, staling that ho is coming to Stratford for the purpose of challenging the winner ot the professional flght. , ELTHAM CLUB.
Tho Eltham Boxing Club held its official opening. on Monday evening The attendance numbered nearly two hundred, and the various bouts mm followed with the keenest Interest. Tiro president of the club (Mr H. D. Forsyth), presided, and among those present were a number of visitors from Stratford, Hawera, and other neighbouring towns.
Six bouts had been arranged, and these were then proceeded with, the matches being between Canute (Stratford) and SI. Bailey (Kawera); A. Clnrry (Eltliam) and Bourke Eltham); j. O'Neill (Eltham) and Itowson (Stratford); .1. Cooper (Eltham) and Foley (Stratford); T. Bell (Eltham) and It. Dudding (Stratford); G. Duddlng (Stratford) and Roberts (Stratford). The. bout between Canute, of Stratford and Milton Bailey, of Hawera, was the best! both contestants sl:owliig a good knowledge of the finer points of tho game. Though tho bout was willing from start to finish good feeling was exhibited by both men throughout. The fight was good, clean, and hard, Mr. C. It. K. dimming was referee. Subsequently several pupils enrolled bringing the total to nearly twenty-a most successful start.—Argus.
