NOTES BY "MOTUROA." The Horowhenna Racing Club's annual meeting takes place at Levin to-day. Light showers have been prevalent there this week, but the course is in good order, and, judging by the numbers of horses early on the scene, fields should be good and racing interesting there to-day. Ten horses remain in the Hdrowhentm Cup, iy 4 miles, and Sir Fanciful (if reserved), Moutoa Ivanova and Rose Pink are all assured of spirited support. Kipling is nominal favorite for the McI Donald .Memorial Handicap, six furlongs, and Nursing Sister and Gold Problem also have friends. A flue field will be seen out In the Mamiksu Hurdles I'j, miles, and it Is quite on the cards that Diamond Nap will break his consistent run of "seconds." Rotard, O'Rane and Hushman can also go fast, and the finish should bo an interesting one. Admiration is likely to come in for solid backing in the Moutoa Hack Welter, seven I furlongs, and Passenger is another that will not be neglected in the betting. Blackhead, American Beauty, and Automoana are reputed to be as fit as hands can make them for the Levin Hack Handicap, six furlongs, and the public may And it hard to separate the winner. Frintemps was reported to bo very sore at Itlccarton and may not be seen at his best to-day. In that case Sir Fanciful or Moutoa Ivanova, if either are reserved, may monopolise the betting in the Wereroa Welter, seven furlongs. A good field will contest the Hokio Hack Handicap, and VanMee Dan, Amerigan Beauty, Automoana and one or two others can all run a good "five," so that an interesting race is probable. In the Maiden Scurry (all Rat 71b) recent form should send Malingerer out favorite, but both Top Dog and Minsk have been galloping in great style lately, and Top Dog's chances look particularly bright. Double winners at the C.J.C. Metropolitan meeting were Gamecock, Isabel, Dainty Step, Duo and Chrj'9ostom. Jack Symons ran consistently throughout the meeting. In four starts he registered one first and three seconds. H. Gray and M. McCarten, with three wins apiece, divided the riding honors at the meeting. Double winners were R. Reed, W. Kitchener, B. Deeley, J. Barry, A. Ellis, J. Campbell, J. O'Shea, and .1. T.'Humphries'. Although beaten in the Electric Plate, the two-year-old Rational was by no means disgraced. He ran the smartest four furlongs of his life, and on the day Gloaming would have beaten anything in the line of horseflesh over the distance. Rational* six starts rim out to four firsts and two seconds, and his owner lacks nothing In gameness In taking on the very best horses in the Dominion.

A PROGRESSIVE CLUB. The programme approved for the Opunalte Racing Club's annual meeting is a splendid one, and shows that the Club Is quite deternilned to keep pace with other Clubs In bidding for the patronage- of horseowners, and tne general sporting public. Racing i 3 booming in New Zealand as It never has before, and it is gratifying to see that our counIry friends have launched out boldly this season.

This year's programme offers £ISOO in stakes, a « against £lll9l last year. The Opunako Cup Jms jumped from £2OO to £350. and the St. Patrick's Handicap from £lB5 to £230. The Handicap Hurdles, which last year were worth £135, have been increased to £2oo—a really good slake for hurdlers. Other Increases are shown, with list year's figures in parentheses, as follows: Electric Hack Handicap, 150 sots (109 sovs.), Wrflier Hank Handicap, 150 sdvs. (103 sovs,) ; President's Hack Handicap, .150 sovs. (135 sovs.), and Farewell Hack Handicap, 150 sovs. (131) sovs.) Another alteration that commands support is tlio reduction of the distance of the President's Handicap from ono mile to six furlongs. in recent years Clio mile race lias not proved popular, and it Is expected that, the shiftier distance wlhl attract a better Held.
