THE LATE MAYOR.
PROPOSED MEMORIAL. GIRLS' HOSTEL BUILDING Sonic months ago the late Mayor of New Plymouth (Mr. Jas. Clarke) and the .Mayoress interested themselves in the establishing of a Girfe' Hostel in New Plymouth, and a committee was appointed to raise money for the purpose. A fortnight ago Mrs. Clarke was compelled, by health reasons, to resign the position of chairwoman, and Mrs. E. A. Walker was appointed to take her place. The late Mayor evinced a prominent interest in the work, and desired to see the Hostel established, before hs resigned, realising' from experience the great need there was for sucli an institution in a town like New Plymouth. At a special meeting of the committee last evening, feeling reference Was made to the untimely end of Mr. Clarke; and a vote of condolence with bis widow and relatives was paßged. was decided that the Hostel should be called "The Clarke Memorial Hostel*" and as appeal is to be made to the citizens of the town for the funds to forthwltl give effect to the proposal.
