BOROUGH COUNCIL. (Troon Our Own Correspondenv.) Wiutara. 13. The regular monthly meeting of the Borough Council was held on Wednesday hist. The noxious weeds inspector advised that he proposed visiting Waitarii at the end of the month, and, it' nothing was done, would take, action against property holders. Borthwicks, Ltd., applied for water supply to their new stocks. —Granted.

The Farmers' Co-op. Society applied for a license to store 1000 cases benzine and 500 of kerosene in James' old store. The borough inspector reported that the quantitry was excessive.—Conditional license granted. Mr. H. Brabant on behalf of property holders wrote asking tho Council to make representation to the Marine Department over tho river erosion, and asking lo send an engineer to report.—Mr. Jennings, Ml',, to bo written to on the matter. The claim of £25 forwarded to Borlhwieks Ltd., for road dunnage, was referred back to the Council, the llrni stating that it should be forwarded to the carting contractors. Tho clerk stated that he had referred ihe matter to the contractors, but I'e had not yet received a reply. The foreman reported that the Council should dispose of the '\-horso grader and replace it with a two rse.—Resolved that tho grader be offered to ihe Machinery Exchange Co., Palmeiston North, for £3O. Authority was given the foreman t.o purchase sis barrels of tar, as requested by him.

The electrical engineer reported that all engines were in good working order, with the exception of No. 1 engine, which required a new piston and liner. He also suggested that all new connections be confined to houses within the t»oft allowance from existing main lines. He urged t!:c Council to consider the advisability cf increasing the capacity of the plant, as at present they were just able to cope with the peak load. The plant was running well, but it could not stand a continuous overload. The Council went into committee to consider the town clerk's salary, and on resuming It was reported that an increase of £SO be granted, making his salary £3OO per annum.

Messrs. A. Allen. .T. Bring and J. Hoskin waited on the Council, and asked far a reduction in their water charges, they considering £G per annum" too much.—Not acceded to.

GENERAL ITEMS. Tl'e Ladies' Guild of Knox Church held a sale of work in St. John's Church on Thursday last, and good business resulted. The sum of £llO, exclusive of the Christmas tree, was taken, which unust be highly gratifying to those engaged. There was an excellent display of goods, and the prices were reasonable. Tho stalls were held* by the following ladies: riaiu sewing, Mesdames Hingeby and Moyes; produce, Mesdames Guinea and Mustchamp, and Miss Rowe; jumble stall (TikorttiKi), Mesdames T. McKenzie, Blain, H. i'urdle. and Miss Purdie; refreshment and afternoon tea, Mrs. H. Mackcrzie, by Misses Sutherland, E. Hingley, O. Merriman, Sadie Bullot; (lowers, Mrs. Purdie, assisted by Mrs. J. K. Furdie. A Christmas tree, arranged by tho scluol children, produced £G for foreign missions.. Misses E. liosio, M. llosi?, and D. Hingley wd charge of the tree. Tho new postal box arrangement at Tlkonngl started on Friday with 00 boxes. The lolder of a box will be able to get his mail it any time desired. It is reported that Jlephone connections aro growing rapidly in ite district. j Another series ol* card games, compv'sing *Vckre, crib and 500, was held in the Clifton fell on Thursday evening last, between tho .Uifton Druids Lodge and t!:e local troop of ae legion of Frontiersmen, and a very enpyable evening was spent. The Druids beat <*o Frontiersmen by 23 games to 22.

The Waitnra Tennis Club opened the season on Thursday last. Mr. Vatighan, vicepresident, extended a welcome to members and friends, and expressed the hope that the season would be a good one. He referred to the amount of work put in by Messrs. A. Hawkins and L, Johnstone, and added that the state of the courts was a credit to and tl'o club. Games then commenced, and continued until dusk.

The Maori and Mr. Clark especially, had a marvellous escape from serious injury. The car was terribly smashed, lire bonnet, radiator, and the steering wheel being broken and smashed. and llio wind screen shattered. .Mr. Clarko received several facial cuts from iho Hying glass. The: Maori was unhurt. The horse broke its front legs and' dislocated its neck.
