LABOR IN AMERICA.

STEPS TO MAINTAIN WAGES. By Telegraph.—Press Aaan.—Copyright. Kece'tved Nov. 14, 8.5 p.m. New York, Nov.-12. While Mr. Samuel Gompers (President of the American Federation of Labor) has not yet given any indication of his attitude on the open shop question, other Federation officials state that the weapon will be used if any attempt is made to lower wages. The Federation's vice-president says that organised Labor is endeavouring to gain a million new members, and is also launching an extensivo campaign to unionise the so-called white collar workers.

Addressing the conference, Mr. Gompers denied that American Labor was opposed to improved methods of machinery in production, except whon changes were introduced, whoso effect upon Labor's welfare was not con-sidered.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.
