The corteges yesterday on the occasion of the burial of (lie late Mayor and the late Captain Russell made up the largest and most impressive funeral ever seen in Taranaki. The duty of marshalling such a large assemblage was ably carried out by the general manager of the New Plymouth Borough Council (Mr. F. T.' Bellringer i and the chief inspector (Mr. R. Day), and the arrangements worked very satisfactorily. A feature of the military funeral was the fine body of men who comprised the firing party, the splendid turn-out being the subject of praise. All the arrangements made by the R.S.A. were highly creditable, the organising of SergtMajor l Bell and Sorgt.-Major Roper greatly contributing to the success of the parade. There was a fire at Stratford yesterday. Shortly after four o'clock in the afternoon an outbreak occurred at the residence of Mr. A. IX MaePherson, Regent Street, and resulted in the washhouse and all its contents being destroyed, and part of the kitchen damaged. A strong wind was blowing at the time, but fortunately it was in the opposite direction from the main building. The brigade was promptly on the scene, but a bucket brigade had the fire fairly well under control. The building and contents were insured in the State Office.

The decision of the Auckland provincial executive of the Farmers' Union to take an active part in politics is meeting with widespread support among the branches of the union. At a meeting of the executive, resolutions approving of the decision were received from 20 brandies. The resolutions were in response to a circular letter issued by the executive setting forth in general terms the action it was proposed to take in regard to the formation of a political party. The chairman, Mr. A. A. Ross, said the question had been discussed* at the Dominion conference of the union,, and it had been decided that the matter should be referred to the branches and come up for final decision at the next Dominion conference. The replies from the Auckland branches meant that the executive had practically received a mandate on the question.

The annual Sale of Work in connection with St. Mary's Ladies' Guild, will this year be held in combination with the Hose Show, commencing on Wednesday afternoon next, and continuing the following afteroon. Up till three years' ago camphor was a comparatively cheap commodity. It could be purchased wholesale in Wellington at 3s (id per lb, and as it is light in weight a pound could be divided into many cakes for use as an antiseptic and purifier. .Since then Japan has became aware that, in Formosa and Japan, she possesses a world's monopoly, and so well did she use her powers that the wholesale price soared up as high as 22s fid per lb (over (100 per cent.), and at the present time the wholesale price of camphor is 18s per lb, as compared with •3s 6d some three years ago.

The vital statistics for October show that the total births registered for the four metropolitan areas amounted to 792, as against 813 in September—a decrease of 21. The deaths in September were 4fi7—a decrease of 5 as compared with the previous month. Of the total fieaths, males contributed 261, females 200. Ninety-six of the deaths were of children under five years of age, being 20.55 per cent of the whole number. Seventy of these were under one year of age. The deaths of 230 persons of (1.) years and upwards were registered during October, as against 247 in the previous month. Five deaths last month were of persons over 90 years of age.

Tho advisability of abolishing the entrance fee charged to nurses entering the St. Helen's Homes for a period "of training was suggested to the Minister for Public Health by Mr. H. E. Holland (Buller). The Minister (Hon.' C. J. Parr) said that the fees had been reduced considerably so that nurses who came from other hospitals were charged £5, Hnd those without any trailing £lO. The disease known as fireblight, which has been introduced into the Auckland district, is causing considerable concern to the Agricultural Department.
