The Daily News. FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 12, 1920. THE AVRO DISASTER.
The second anniversary of Armistice Day will long be remembered by the residents ot! New Plymouth by reason of the terrible fate which overtook the three occupants of Messrs. Walsh Bros.' aeroplane, which, after making many successful flights, crashed to earth on its last return trip to the racecourse, resulting in the almost instantaneous death of the pilot (Captain Russell), the Mayor (Mr. James Clarke) and Miss Warnock. Although there is always a possibility of a mishap to aircraft, yet so smoothly and successfully had this machine been working, that probably there was not the slightest thought of danger by any of those who participated in the flights since the. Avro arrived here. Apart from the fact that this is the first aeroplane that has visited Taranaki, the disaster is one that ennnpt fail |» bf desgly deplored, Thm
useful lives full of promise have been cut off with tragic suddenness. At one moment full of vitality and exhilaration, and like a flash they were plunged into eternity. There is but one feeling to-day throughout the town and district—intense sorrow for the victims and deep sympathy with their relatives. It is difficult adequately to convey how greatly the community was affected on learning the sad news. We can only say that no such disaster lias ever been experienced in New Plymouth, and that it has shaken the people to the very depths. We join with the whole community in heartfelt sympathy with the bereaved.
