In connection with tho importation of "Ephos" basic, phosphate from Safaga, a port in the Red Sea, it may be of interest to know that "Ephos" 'is shipped by (the Egyptian Phosphate Co., Ltd., of Glasgow. The phosphate deposit is situated about thirty miles from Safaga, and the product is railed in its raw state to the shipping port by the company's private railway, oil-burning locomotives being in use. The phosphate is ground and prepared for the market at Safaga, where the company has had installed, at a cost of many thousands of pounds, the latest modern machinery for the preparation of "Ephos" for" the world's markets, and for loading it into ocean-going steamers. A large staff, including a medical officer and various experts in this particular branch of business, is maintained by the company at Snfagn, The whole nf the provisions for their maintenance, as well as oil for the locomotives, has to be imported. Owing to the lack of rainfall, the water required by the community has to be distilled from tho sea. this in itself necessitating the installation of a costly duplicated plant. There is deep sea water up to the company's private loading jetties, whence "Epjjos" is shipped to the United Kingdom and other countries in Europe, India, South Africa, New Zealand, etc., otc.
