A London cable announces the death of Lord James Inverclyde, at the age of 55 years. The institution of the Rev, E. L. Harvie as vicar of St. Andrew's Churchj Epsom, by Bishop Averill, took place on Friday evening last Mr. Malcolm Ross, who has been official war correspondent with the New Zealand Division, is returning to New Zealand shortly.
On the application of Mv. H. R. Billing Mr. H. B. Gibson (Stratford) wag yeaterday admitted a solicitor of the Supreme Court. Mr. Gibson is a son of Mr. A. B. Gibson, of New Plymouth. Mr. E. C. Fletcher, of New Plymouth, who returned from active military service recently, is to lie the first manager of the National Bank of New Zealand's new branch at Haw'era.
A London cablegram states that the Unionists have selected Mr. P. 11. B. Fisher, late Minister of Customs and Marine, as candidate for Widnes, Lancashire, in the by-election due to Mr. Hall Walker's elevation to the peerage. At last night's meeting of the New Plymouth Borough Council a motion of sympathy with the Mayoress' (Mrs. C. H. Burgess), in the loss sustained by the death of. her mother, was carried on the motion of Crs. Collis and Hayden. A meeting of supporters of Mr.«C. H. Wilkinson, M.P., was held at Eltham yesterday afternoon, when he definitely "announced that he would not be a candidate for re-election at the forthcoming parliamentary polls. A further meeting will be called to select a successor.— Press Assoc.
Mrs. Winter, St. Aubyn Street, has been advised that her Rifleman C. C. R. Winter, is due back bv the Hororata, which is expected at Wellington on September 20; arid Mr. A, Tunbridge, Gill Street, has also been advised that his nephew. Private W, J. Hntchings, is returning by the same transport.
The Collector of Customs at New Plymouth lias received notice of the following changes in the personnel of the staff nt.the local customhouse: Mr. W. P. Kelleher, who has beon stationed here for the past four years, is to be transferred to the statistical branch of the head office, Wellington, and Mr. W. H. S. Lewis, of Auckland, will come to New Plymouth as examining officer. Mr. J. P. Cad'zow. of the head office, is also to be transferred to New Plvmouth as a further addition to the staff. These changes will take place from September
Mr. P. Asher received word yesterday of the death of his father, Mr. Joseph Asher, which took place at the residence of hia daughter, Mrs. W. F. Bead, Te Poi, Waikato, yesterday afternoon. The Inte Mr. Asher, who was 71 years of ago, was an old resident of New Plymouth, having been in the district for over 35 vears. TTo had been prominently identified with the Masonic Lodge and also tlip Methodist Church, and removed to the north a few months ago on retiring from business. His wife predeceased him about two years ago. He leaves two sons, Mr. P. Asher, of New Plymouth, and Mr. Lionel Asher, of Auckland, and two daughters. Mm Rudkin, of Tarlki, and Mrs. Read, of To Poi.
