OKATO. (From Ouf Own Correspondent.) Notwithstanding frightful weather, the Hempton Hall on Thursday evening last contained a capital audience to listen to tho concert programme arranged by the Methodist Ladies' Guild. When I say that many of the old residents voted tho concert the "best amateur show" yet staged in Okato, some idea will be formed of its excellence. The guild had arranged a drawing room stage, with curtains, flags, carpets, and a wealth of furniture, which gave the entertainment quite a cosy, homely view. Performers were mostly visitors from down tha coast, several of them coming from Opunake. Tho drawing "card" was, of course, the Rev. Papakakura, who gave of his best, delighting young and oUIThis talented vocalist generously contributed no less than five solos, and, in addition, sang in a concerted item with the brothers and.M, Hughson. The following ladies and gentlemen also contributed: —Mesdames Jones, Baxcndole, T. Hughson, the Misses Pentelow and Hugh son, and Messrs Bradley (of Opuuake), the Pentelow family (cf Oaonui), Jenkins, T. and M. Hughson, and Captain Hawkins. The accompaniments were played by Mrs. T. Hughson, Misses Hughson and Pentelow, and Mr. Peareon. At tlie conclusion of the programme, the Rev. Mr. King warmly thanked the performers for providing such a splendid evening's enoyment. The National Anthem, sung lustily by audience and performers, concluded the concert, Tho Ladies' Guild entertained the performers to supper in the ante-room, and a very pleasant half-hour was thus spent. v A word of special mention is due to Mr. E. Leedoin for his energetic sale of tickets. This gentleman easily holds the j record for ticket-selling j n fhi 6 pa r t 0 f the Dominion, and his services are always ungrudgingly placed at the services lof promoters of all charitable or patrioitic efforts. The .genial "Teddy" is not • talker, but a Iti&ty and ready hclpn.
