DURHAM ROAD. (From Our Own Oorrc-pondeiii). 1 am plca-.cd to be able tu report that Mr. F. liodunski's sou (Andrew), who suffered serious injuries as the result of a gelignite explosion a week or so back, is ii'iw out of danger and is making rapid progress towards recovery. Mr. and Mrs. Felix Mischefski.'of Iliintcrville, are visiting friends and relatives in this district. I understand that Mr. M. Crcan has lea-ed his farm to Mr. 1.. MaiVa during his absence at the front. The latter tal.o| possession at the end of the present month. It will be gratifying to creamery suppliers to know that the lessee i'jtends to supply the local crcynerv.

Mr. A MtEwen, whose brother leaves wiili the '-'.Hli Reinforcements, nas also made satisfactory arrsuijiomonts for the man igcment of llioir farm (luring their absence. In order to complete neces-arv alk-ations, etc., Mr. McKwen has keen granted extended leave till tile middle of September. On Friday evening last, despite unfavorable weather conditions, a large number of persons, including visitors from Kent road, llawera, and other places, attended a farewell social tendered by the residents of the road to Private P. 0. ("Joe") McEwen and M. (,'rea:i. who were home on final leave. The following programme indicates that a very enjoyable evening was spent: Overture, dance, items, vocal items (duet and solo), the latter 'leing contributed by Mrs. Bitterson, of Manunui, Mr. McEwen and Mr. Brouuli, while-vari-ous persons assisted the Hrst named in the music for the dances. Before the supper was distributed the ebairman of the school committee presented each soldier with a wristlet watch on bchalE of the residents and expressed the hope tbat both would return safe and sound. Both recipients returned thanks for the present and assured those present that their kindness as shown by the present and the attendance there that evening would always perpetuate .pleasant memories.

The school examination fixed by the inspector for August 3 caused the school committee to approach' the authorities for an extension of time to a date which would enable the children to recover from the epidemic of mumps, measles, etc.. and .which, had a serious effect on the attendance.

Some little time back a goose was offered as the means for augmenting i'.M.C.A. funds and by auction realised the sum of il'i Us. As the amount had been mis-stated in previous acknowledgments I am asked to draw attention to the actual sum. as above. The ladies in what is called the "Maketawa" district, and which includes Norfolk, Durham and Dudley roads, will hold a mart day in Inglewood on August 4, the proceeds of the endeavor to go to the Y.M.C.A. As this association fills a gap for the comfort, etc., of the fighting boys and relieves the authorities in that respect, it is hoped a special effort will be made by those who recognise the hard conditions our men must at times be suifeiing. and help swell the fund* which appear as Inglewood district contributions.
