VESSEL BURNED AND SUNK. - IN . DOCK AT ST. JOHN'S. St. John's (N. 8.), March 13. A 'fire and explosion destroyed and tunlt the steamer Matatua while lying lie the docks here loading cargo for New Zealand. The captain was killed. The cause <>f the flri is unknown. Matatua is owned by the Shaw, Savill Line, but was under charter to .w< New Ze&alnd Shipping Company, and Vfts to leave St. JoEh's on March 11.), * TflE MATATUA'S CAPTAIN, . Christchurch, Yesterday; C&pttin Gilman, of the Matatua, had been in the service of the Shaw, Savill Company about twenty years. He was formerly chief officer of the old Arawa in th'f> mall service. Later he commanded the Pakeha. Several years ago he married Miss Gibbons, of Wellington, Wellington, Last Night. The captain of the Matatua married Hiu Grubb, not Miss Gibbons. The vessel had four hundred and fifty tons of reel newspaper aboard for New Zealand oflUes.
