STAR OF CANADA.
DISTRESSED SAILORS. By Telegraph—Press Association. Gisborne, Last Night. Some indignation was expressed locally on Saturday at the Tyser Company's atitude in regard] to taking the seamen from the stranded Star of Canada back to England. Many of the crew are in necessitous circumstances. Most of them obtained an advance on leaving Home, and half their pay has been going to their families, so that they had very little to draw when their employment terminated with the wreck of the vessel. The men are indisposed to look for charity, but some of them are absolutely stranded, and they are being kept at their boarding-houses only by the good nature of the proprietors, who have not the heart to turn the men nut. A subscription list on their behalf was opened, but late on Saturday a telegram was received by the Collector of Customs from the Marino Department, authorising him to send the sailors to Wellington, where ships will be found for them. Romp of tho men will go south by the Mokoia to-night. The position of the stranded vessel appears to be daily growing more serious. At high tide to-day slie was drawing 11% feet aft, while her nose was under water, and some .10 feet of the forward deck was awash. Divers are busily engaged in trying to locate the damage. Tho lightering of cargo has been practically completed, and it is expected that' this evening will see the Star of Canada an emptv shin as far as her cargo is concerned. No official information as to her abandonment can be obtained, but Captain Plunkett, of the London Salvage Association, is in charge of the operations on hoard the vessel. It is persistently announced tha the Union Steam Shin Company has bought the wreck as it lies.
