TURF TOPICS. (By "Moturoa.") % The Wanganui Jockey Club' autumn meeting opens on Thursday, and on the whole very satisfactory acceptances' have been received for the -first day's racing. Taranaki horses are freely en-' gaged, but New Plymouth horses have| dropped out. The Cup field has been' reduced to ten, leaving the elect of the Greenwood stable, Miss Mischief, at the head of the handicaps. The Canterbury "crack" is sure to command a big fol-' lowing, as will the consistent Mendip. Kopu and Birkdale are a sturdy pair from the other side of the island, and Merrivonia will have many friends in the Empire city. The bottom weights raced in Taranaki recently, and of the quartette Shining Star has shaped most like a stayer. There is every probability of an interesting race on Thursday. Soaking rains on Saturday and Sunday have improved the Wanganui course, but on the heavy tracks train-! ing gallops were necessarily very slow. On Saturday. Madam Madcap, Miss Mischief and Pierene each did serviceable work, but Vice-Admiral did not please the touts. North-East and St. Bill were sprinted, and Alec Hall's pair should strip better on Thursday than at New Plymouth. A good number of others pottered about in the slush. The rain held off on Sunday morning for an hour or two, and a little work was accomplished. Miss Mischief easily held Vice-Admiral in a smart four-fur-long run, and Madam, Madcap (alone) did a slow round, finishing fast up the straight. Playmate and St. Felix, singly, rattled over once round, but Dearest just cantered. Hall's team was restricted to slow work. | Trainer T. Quinlivan arrived at Wanganui last night with Esmeh, Montiform, Parable, and Winning Post. Mer-' rivonia has arrived, and a number of Hawera horses will reach the old con-' vincing ground to-day. The weather has' cleared up, and the winding-up gallops' promise to shed some light on the eter-, nal question, "What will win at tlia' meeting?" j
