AN ANGRY TELEGRAM

X T EWIA%MARRIED MAX BEFORE THE MAGISTRATE. Auckland, February 24. The danger of a newly-married man sending a telegram to Ws young wife without first considering the legal position was illustrated at the Magistrate's Court this morning. The defendant, a genial-looking man, explained that;he had, in heat, sent a telegram to his wife stating that if she did not return home before a certain date he would leave Auckland. Witness added: "I never meant it, your Worship. Why! We were only married on January 28th this year! Mr. C. C. Kettle, S.M.: Why, this is only February 24. Your honeymoon is hardly over yet. 'Defendant said the fact was that he objected to going to his wife's mother's place or being mixed up with her family at all. He came to town on Tuesday to look for work, and when he got back home and could not get into his house he felt hot about it and sent the telegram to his wife. Mr. Kettle: Well, you know that put you within the limit of the law, as you arc bound to make provision for the woman you have just married. The defendant said he had a good home, with eight furnished rooms, if his wife would stay there. He assured the Bench that he had.no.idea of levying.* Xew Zealand. .'..,. Mr. Kettle (to the wife):' What is your age? The wife: Twenty-four. The husband: It was twenty-five a month ago. Mr. Kettle said the couple had better try and settle matters. The husband: The home is no good to me if she won't come back to it. Mr. Kettle said the husband must make adequate provision for his wife if they could not arrange matters. He quite believed the man had no idea of leaving Xew Zealand, and would therefore dismiss the information. He considered that in the face of such a telegram his wife was justified in the action she had taken.
