NEWCASTLE COAL XRADE. By Cable—Press Association—Copyright. Sydney, February 25. The slackness of the Newcastle coal trade was demonstrated last week, when only 50,107 tons were exported. When trade is good the amount of coal exported averages 120,000 tons. In order to relieve unemployment at Newcastle the Government is opening a registry office, and an officer 'will arrange for the dispatch of men to other parts of the country. STATE CONSERVATORIUM. Sydney, February 25. The State proposes to start a conservatorium of music. THE LITHOOW STRIKE. Sydney, February 25. The Lithgow engine drivers and firemen have rejected the masters' terms of settlement. Collectors are waiting on business people for subscriptions on behalf of the strikers' families. A TOTAL WRECK. , Melbourne, February 25. The schooner Australia is a total wreck. She has canted seawards, and heavy seas are breaking over her. SHOOTING ACCIDENT. Sydney, February 25. The head nurse of Lady Chelmsford's children was accidentally shot at the back of Government House. A person was cleaning a rifle in an adjoining room, when it exploded, and the bulle* passed through the door. She was admitted to the hospital. AWKWARD FOR LABOR MINISTERS. Sydney, February 25. The men employed on the MoreeMungindi railway, the Government's first big day labor job, are demanding increased pay, and threaten to strike if it is refused. THE SPECULANT WRECK. Melbourne, February 25. The Marine Court has suspended the certificate of the captain of the Speculant for six months. AUSTRALIAN JEALOUSIES. Sydney, February 25. Mr. Griffith has written to the Melbourne Harbor Trust thanking it for accepting the Fitroy Dock's tender for I a dredge, stating that such a spirit will destroy the miserable local animosities which have disfigured Australian public life. ETHEL HARRIS' DEATH. Perth, February 25. Smart, who is under sentence of death for the murder of Ethel Harris, has written to Mary Pemberdy, whom he bigamously married, expressing sorrow for what he has done. Otherwise he appears unconcerned. SYDNEY GASWORKERS. Sydney, February 25. The Gas Company's outdoor workers' union has passed., a vote of- confidence in its secretary, Mr. Kerr, whose dismissal for alleged drunkenness brought about the strike.
