FARMERS' UNION AND POLITICS
SOUTH CANTERBURY'S OPINION. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Timaru, Last Night. The South Canterbury Farmers' Union executive yesterday discussed the proposal from the Auckland Meat Union to organise a farmers' political party. All the members objected to the Union taking up party politics, as leading to dissension and disintegration, but will send the proposal to the branches for consideration. It was urged that farmers must look after their political interests, but not through the Union, which has too much other work to do. The executive supports the harbor board's request for the abolition of differential railway charges on frozen meat from Oamaru, favoring Port Chalmers against Timaru by 3s a ton, a cheaper rate for 37 miles longer distance.
