The Canadian Government has taken preliminary steps in the trade negotiations with the United States. The feeling with regard to the reciprocity overtures with the United States is keen. New York, January 8.

The Reciprocity Conference has opened at Washington. Mr. Knox, Secretary of State, is present. An immense mass of details in reference to the tariff schedule •will have to be examined, and the belief is expressed that the most that can be hoped from the present negotiations is a covenant agreeing to reciprocity in regard to a limited number of articles.
