ROYAL LIFE-SAVING SOCIETY
At the Municipal Baths yesterday Mr. W. Payne, of the Royal Life-Saving Society, Wanganui Centre, held nn examination of the detached class, the members of which are A. Maxwell, F. Morris, E. Pfankuch and W. Lints. The two former went for the bronze medallion, and tile latter for the teacher's certificate and honorary instructor's certificate, and it is satisfactory to note that all were successful. The" test from--a theoretical point of view was very stiff, including forty questions, of which a few are as follows: Describe the thorax of the chest; what does it contain? Describe the heart, its position, shape, structure, etc. Describe the bipod purification system. How is respiration carried on'r.aturally! What do you mean by asphyxia? What arc the causes which turn the face blackest in asphyxia? ; All the methods of land drill, in rescue, release and resuscitation drill had to be carried out in the water, under four different methods, with the last exception, covering a distance in all of 100 yards. Messrs. Lints and Pfankuch arc desirous of securing merit certificates, and they will be put through the tests at the baths in the course of a day or two. It is to be hoped that a* ladies' class will shortly be formed, and that New Plymouth, like Wanganui, will soon be able to boast of holders of the bronze medallion by the fair exponents of the swimming art. Mr. Payne expressed himself as very well pleased with the exhibition of the competitors in the initial examination, mentioning especially the water work.
