CONFERENCE CONCLUDED. \ by Telegraph.—Press Association. Hokitika, January 5. The annual conference of the New Zealand Education Institute resumed today. On the report of a special committee, the basis of representation at the annual meeting was altered so that, in future, district institutes wjith at least ten members will have one representative; with Gl members, 2; with 121 members, 3; with 201 members, 4; for each additional 100, up to GOO, an additional representative; for 000 members, 8; for 720 members, 0; for 850 to 1000, 10 members. Several amendments in the regulations for examinations arc to be suggested to the Minister. The institute desires an improvement in the arrangement of the syllabus, and recommends the abolition of scholarships for primary school children, in order that those children who stand highest on the free pass list, and who may require to live away from homo in order to attend secondary schools, may receive a boarding allowance. Suggestions were made for the improvement of the Training College regulations, and also that the aid of the police be available in truancy cases when necessary. The institute resolved that the next meeting should be held at Timaru, a_nd an interesting conference concluded with votes of thanks to the officers and executive with special reference to the particular services rendered. The election of officers resulted as follows:—President, Mr. O. D. Flamant, North East Valley, Dunodin; secretary, Mr. H. A. Parkinson; treasurer, Mr. K. U. Just; executive, Mr. K. B. lloimcs, Mr. George Flux, and Mr. J. H. Harkness. The balance-sheet submitted by Mr. E. N. Just on behalf of Mr. Hughes (unavoidably absent) disclosed a satisfactory state of affairs. Receipts for the year had totalled £059 18s Id, and the expenditure £404 Ids O'/nd. The balance in hand on the several accounts amounted to £1707 2s Sd, of which £IOOO was to the credit of the legal defence; fund, and £4OB 15s 0d on general account to the benevolent fund. £122 10s ad had been transferred from the legal defence fund. A special vote of appreciation of the i excellent work done for the institute and . for education by the retiring treasurer i (Mr. Thos. Hughes) was carried by ac- ! clamation. The institute also heartily ' congratulated Mr. Hughes on his pro- ; motion to the inspectorate in North - Canterbury.
