CONTROL OF THE PACIFIC
AUCKLAND LAUGHED AT. By Cable—Press Association—Copyright. Sydney, January 0. The Daily Telegraph, commenting on the. Auckland Star's arguments in favor of removing the headquarters of the High Commissioner of the Pacific to Auckland, says: "As far as we know, no proposal for the change has been made by authority or with authoritative sanction, but why make the transfer? The place to govern from is in the country governed. It is a reasonable aspiration which in future may bloom into actuality that the Commonwealth may have a Southern Pacific Hegemony comprising all the islands outside New Zealand's jurisdiction, but even in that event the islands would have to be administered from within. A High Commissioner living in Sydney or Auckland, and making periodical visits to his island domain would cut such a figure as occasionally appears to the public entertainment in Gilbertian opera."
