INTERIM WITH MAGISTRATES
DENIED BY THE MINISTER OP JUSTICE. MR. NORTHCROFT INVITED TO EXPLAIN. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. Hon. J. G. Findlay, Minister for Justice, interviewed regarding the statements made by Mr. H. W. Nortlicroft, S.M., in Auckland yesterday, relative to political ! interference with magistrates, said he was utterly at a loss to understand Mr. Xorthcroft's remarks. They came as an absolute surprise to him. During his ! tenure of office as Minister for Justiceno suggestion had ever readied him of anything of the kind. He had oh occasion been written to bv persons with cases before the Court, but had at all times uniformly refused to take any action whatever, the procedure in the matter of appeal to the higher Court being open to those not satisfied with the magisterial decisions. <I am quite unable to understand Mr. Xorthcroft's remarks and can only ask him to mention any circumstances which would bear out hi* statements," added the Minister, "for I know my predecessor in office was iust, as careful as I have been to see that no outside influence, political or otherwise is allowed to interfere with our judicial system/'
