STOPPING THE JOHNSON-JEFFRIES FIGHT. By Cable—Press Association—Copyright, San Francisco, June 16. Reuter reports tliat Governor Gillette ■has instructed Mr. Webb, Attorney-Gen-eral, to stop the Jell'ries-Johnson prize fight. Mr. Webb is commencing proceedings. PRIZE FIGHTS CRIMINAL. PROMOTERS WILL TAKE FIGHT ELSEWHERE. , THE VALUE OF THE PICTURE RIGHTS. Received June 16, 0.15 p.m. New York, June 16. Governor Gillette states that prize fights are criminal, but sparring exhibitions are lawful. He describes a prize fight as a contest where there is of a reward, coupled with the infliction of some degree of bodily harm. . • Tex Rickard replied that if Governor CHllett opposes the fight, he will immediately take the fight to Suit Lake City or one of the Nevada cities. The principals have agreed to sell the moving pictures for £30,000, th.» fighters taking £IO.OOO apiece, and Rickards and Gleason the remaining £IO,OOO. Rickard asserts that the buyers have not stipulated for the length of the match. The sura of £30,000 will be patd if the match only occupies a single round.
