SHIP IN A GALE.

A THRILLING SCENE. By Cable—Press Association—Copyright. Sydney, June 10'. The whole of the population of Portsea turned out to watch the thrilling straggle of the small steamer Manawatu in a gale at Port Phillip Heads, The Manawatu had the alternative of lacing almost certain disaster in a living gale if she proceeded, or of returning to Port Phillip. The latter course was decided on, but those on board were appalled when it came to the rip. It chopped up in great perpendicular whirling walls, the water rising and falling enormous heights tossed the vessel like a cork, with- the 'water crashing all over her. Finally, however, she gained shelter. Forty sheep were killed or drowned, but the vessel was uninjured.
