SOUTHLAND WINTER SHOW.

A 'SUCCESSFUL AFFAIR. By Telegraph—Press Association. lnvercargill, Last Night. The annual mid-winter A. and P. Show was qpened to-day. There was an increase of entries, and the show was a credit to the district. A feature is the exhibition of root crops. Potatoes are of exceptional merit, and the judge said that they formed one of the finest collections he had ever been called to adjudicate upon. The cheese exhibits were disappointing in numbers, owing, it is thought, to the reluctance of the younger cheese makers to enter the lists against their older rivals. The quality, however, is eminentilv satisfactory. The Dunedin champions failed to hold their own, although they 'held the premier position. In connection with the 60 guinea watch, presented by Mr. John Sawers, of Edendale, which was competed for for the' first time, Mr. W. C. Hislop (Wyndham cheese maker), by securing one point more than Omiomi in various cheese classes, gained first claim on the watch, which has to be won lour times. Farm'butter and cheese produced good entries. In 'grain, wheat was a strong class, and Sparrowbills and Garton oats were also excellent specimens of Southland's producing qualities. Barley was somewhat weak. Perennial and Italian' rye were said by the judge to be of exceptional quality. There were big entries in hams and 'bacon, and bread and scones.
