STRONG RESOLUTION'S. Per Press Associalioi: Chrislcluuch, Lust Night. At a meeting uf the l.'hristchnrch Women's Christian 'J'uinpeiiim-e Union held (in Wednesday, u vigorous diseussion look place concerning tin- recent Te Oianga Home trouble, ami the ful-I lowing resolutions were passed:—"That the union strongly protests against the inhuman system of punishment as practised at the Te Oranga Home as savoring more of barbaric time* than Ihe twentieth century; the union considers that it is degrading and humiliating the unfortunate girl inmates in their own eyes and in those of their companions li'y Hogging, cutting nil' the hair, cell punishment, ami similar brutalities, anil I that incalculable harm in done in ninny ways, and such treatment of girl* is
an insult to the womanhood of the colon v and should not he tolerated by | New"Zealand citizens. (2) That the union calls upon the Minister of Education to alter these barbaric practices by introducing a more scientific and enliohtened system, and so allow the members to feel assured that its action in all such matters is in the direction of jus- ■ lice and humanity. (3) That the recent circumstances only emphasises the neeesj sitv for local hoards of control composed , of'men and women , which have often - been asked for by this union and other women's societies'. This union also em- ! phasiscs the great need for careful , classification of the inmate-. (4) That I a vote of thanks be accorded to the . editor of the Lyttelton Times for his consistent and able advocacy of a more 3 humane and enlightened system of mana agement in connection with Te Oranga t Homo and other State institutions."
