(By "Moturoa.") Answers to Correspondents.—'"P.F.": Dawn's record—four starts, four firsts—was written before Lis victory in the Maiden Race at Christchureh, but unfortunately did not see print until after the race was nw. Dawn has now won five times out of six starts. Details to hand point to the fact that Klcvation was the unlucky horse in the New Z-aland Cup. Six furlongs from liomf he galloped on something in front "I him, anil, coming on to his nose, was thrown light back in the rear. But the gallant little son of Sail Francisco put in some lons strides in the last halfmile. ami finished just out of a place. Master D-'lnval ( £1.124) was a slightly letter favorite than the "Preston" combination. Ap.i and Frisco ( C 1018); Elevation ( £8'.15) was next in demand; then followed Parifutn and Armi=ticc, carrying -I!4Ht apiece. Malmta. ( and Zimmerman ( £3701. Malmta broke the line and led past the stand from • Klcvation. Probable. Armi-ticc. Paritulu and Grand Slam, who were hunched. an;l Master Dclaval was last. Along the >. back s-t ret eh Mahnta was bowling along y with a two-lengths lead of Elevation. r Armistice. Paritutu, Probable and Frisco nest in that order. Master Delayal

could be seen coming fast through the field when half the diatanco had been run, and Elevation ran up into second place, but stumbled at the sis furlong post and dropped back, leaving Paritutu in Becond place, and the same pair were shown the way into the straight, Armistice, Frisco, Master Delaval and Elevation being close attendants. When heads were turned for home Elevation came fast, while Armistice quickly fell away. Two furlongs from the winning post Master Delaval, Frisco : Elevation, nnd Lapland closed on Mahutn, and the latter dropped out, leaving Master Delaval and Frisco in charge. It seemed as if the favorite would prevail, but the I light-weight, who had been ridden ft I beautiful race by L. G. King, still bad something left in him, and weiring down the top-weight in the last furlong, scored a meritorious victory by a bare length from Master Delaval, with Lapland, who finished very fast on the outside, a length away in third place. Then followed Elevation, Mahutn, Apa and Grand Slam with the rest a long way in the rear. The time, 3min 28 4-ssec, has only been beaten once, in Canteen's venr, when the distance was left behind in 3min 27 l-ssec.

The times for flic different distances in the Cup were: mile, 51 %sce; 6 furlongs, lmin 19sec; 1 mile, lmin4ssec; l'/ t miles, 2min ll'/jsec; l'/ 2 milos, 2min 36'/ 2 sec. Dawn was one of the last to leave the mark in the Maiden Handicap, but quickly ran through his field, and had everything whipping at the distance. Munjeet carried a heap of money in the Stewards' Handicap, nearly a thousand pounds being opposite his name on the tote. Lord Soult (£651) nnd Idealist (.£039) were fancied next. Fireiron had 479 tickets on him, and Gold Crest 422. Munjeet got away well, but before fifty yards had been covered Lord Soult had rushed to the lead, closely followed by Gold Crest. Lord Soult was indulged with the lead until well into the straight, when Gold Crest ranged alongside and easily holding his own the chestnut colt passed the judge's box an easy winner by two and a-half lengths. King Billy rushed into third place, and the Royal Artillery filly, Tremulous, who was the outsider of the field, ran fourth.

Four thousand seven hundred guineas —the price of an annuity which would keep a modest man in" comfort for the rest of his life—was the enormous sum realised at the September Doncaster sales of tliouroughbred stock for a yearling colt, after a spirited contest' between three millionaires. The youngster may turn out the greatest horse of his time, and win the Derby and many other races for the purchaser, or he may prove absolutely valueless for racing. His purchase is a sheer speculation. The eolt was one of the draft sent up by Sir Tatton Sykes from his famous breeding stud at Sledmere, Yorks, and is by the most famous of all living sires, Gallinule, out of the wonderful marc, La Fleche, whose racing triumphs in the colors of the late Baron de Hirseh belong to the last decade. He is a beautiful, well-grown brown horse, and when he was brought into the ring there was a rush to buy him. The first bid was 2000 guineas, and very soon humbler purchasers dropped out, and the contest was left to three millionaires — Sir Robert Jardine, Mr Musker, and Mr Sol. Joel. The head of the famous Barnato group of South African mines outstayed his rivals, and the colt was knocked down to Mr Joel at the above price. Enormous as this sum is, it is

by no means a record, for it will be rcmembered that Mr R. S. Sievier gave over £IO,OOO each for Sceptre and Duke of Westminster as yearlings when he was at the zenith of hi 3 racing exploits. The eleven yearlings submitted by Sir Tatton Sykes realised the enormous sum of 15,050 guineas, or an average of 1,369 guineas each.
