HEAVY RAINFALL AND FLOODS.
RAILWAY AND TELKGRAPH INTER RUPI'MD. PER PRESS ASSOCIATION. Christchdrch, March 24. Heavy raiu fell in North Canterbury on Saturday and Sunday and still continues. The Ashley riper is in a high state uf flood, being higher than it has reachsdfor iea or 12 years. The embankment did not confine the river to its pr.per course, and the surrounding country is flooded. The river Eyre, which joins the Ashley, is also flooded, pare of the Ashley bridge being washed away and the line rendered impassable. From Kaiapoi through Flaxton there is one shaet of water this morning on both sides of the railway line. The Oxford branch line at Waver ley is also broken through by floods. There has been a verv heavy downpour of rain in the northern district, and it still continues. In the south, railway and telegraph communication are interrupted between Orari and AshburtOD, pa»B6Dgers for south being booked for Raogitata. A gang of workmen has left by express to repair the damages. In the Ashburton j district rain has been falling since Thursday, and it is still raining steadily. The Ashburton river has not bean so bigh for 18 years.
