ASSISTING THE SOLDIER.
MONEY FOR •OULTRY FARMS
CHRI6TCHURCH BOARD'S
POLICY.
At a meeting of the Canterbury Land Board last week aJi understanding was arrived'at in respect of applications from discharged soldiers for financial assistance in setting appoultry farms. The GomniLsioner of Crown Lands, Mr. H. D. M. liaszard, stated that the case before the board was that of a discharged soldier to whom the board, a Bhort time ago, had advanced £500 towards the purchase of a suburban property. He now made application for a further advance of £350, wherewith to purchase fowls to stock the farm and the necessaryplant. About £160 was for the purchase of foodstuffs.
The board declined this application, as they considered that it was too speculative a proposition for a man. such as the. applicant, who was not a thorough espert in poultry-raising and management, believ-iv .<;£*+ it might load to the disappointment of the a]>plicant himself ay.d t<i Ins?- bo tW Government. The board was prepared, however, to recommend a grant of £06 for the purchase of plant of a tangiblecharacter used in connection with poultry-raising. Jp- this case the commissioner added the man .was a tradesman, and the hoard was of opinion that it-would be bettor for him to continue, at his trade and Tvork gradually into the poultry business as he Rained experience -of it. The board-.considered, that the matter was of sufficient public interest to permit of the publication of the.fonts., in^ order that discharged soldiers who might be thinking of. making similarapplications might know the attitude adopted By''tHebdafcl. •
