The Australians made a successful attack between the Snmme and the Ancre, advancing SUO yard* on a front of 1100 y ; *rds. After heavy artillery preparation, the Germans launched a strong local atraok b -t#e -n La Clytte and Voormezeele, and succeeded in the centre in entering the Allies' froat lines in Ridge vVooJ. They were repulsed at other points. The French extended th-ir position south of La Clytte. The British h-we occupied Kerkuk, eighty miles from Mosul, the Turks retreatiag northward.
