The South African forces are entering upon a campaign against admirably trained and equipped troops. The~lwmber of Germans" is estimated at 10,000, composed of infantry,.lartillery, and a camel corps of 500, well supplied with machine guns. Prisoners state that there are 66 gun batteries.

Many police posts, > virtually blockhouses, manned by ex-artillerymen, aro dotted about the country. The military and reserves are armed with Mausers and one-edged saw-like bayonets.
The stations aro connected by telephone, telegraph, and wireless. The territory is difficult for operations, and tliei-o pro several defensive stations of great strength.
