WAR NOTES.
DISLOCATION OF SHIPPING
A letter received by an Auckland resident gives some account of the great activity in India following the declaration of war, and of the dislocation of shipping consequent on providing for the transportation of so large a force. The writer, under date of August 17, says:—''l expect it will be some time before this letter reaches you, and the P. and O. boats have all been running late. It has been a.busy week, as the steamers are- all getting s ready to carry troops to France. They have been working day and night getting in stores and coal, and when this is completed the ships will go round to Bombay to embark the troops. All the British-India mail and other boats have been taken off their usual runs, so there must bo a large number of troops leaving. The six German boat? captured in Calcutta have been taken up oy t-iie Government for coal, and they will follow on to supply^ the troopships and men-o'-war escorting them. It is a very serious time here until we know they have reached their destination safely." .
