CIVIL CASES

Twelve civil cases were called upon and were either settled or adjourned.

FUTURE,

Olive J. Roughton, charged with driving a vehicle at night at Spring Grove without two proper lights on either side, pleaded guilty by letter. Constable Fitzsimmons stated that a party,'including defendant, were driving home from a picnic at the Rabbit Island on Easter Monday evening, without lights. There had been a fatal accident at Spring Grove that evening. The Magistrate imposed a penalty of £3, with costs 7s, and intimated that in the future the penalties would be increased.

Raymond Biggs, similarly charged, pleaded guilty to having one light only. He said he understood that if he carried one light only it was sufficient. . The Magistrate asked why defendant did not pull up when called upon .on the night of the accident at Spring Grove. Defendant: I did, sir. The Magistrate said that the evidence at the inquest was that he did not. Constable Fitzsimmons stated that he had since ascei-tained that defendant | did pull up, but he got abuse for not ! pulling lip sooner, and went on. After discharging hie- party he returned to the scene of the accident. j The Magistrate said it was a breach of the by-law not to carry two lights, but as defendant was carrying one on the driver's Bide he would take this into consideration. A fine of 10s, with costs 7s, was imposed. Thomas Newman, similarly charged, pleaded guilty by letter, and was fined £3, with costs 7s. A similar .charge against Robert Wallace was withdrawn.

Roy Bateup, for riding n bicycle in Richmond without a light, pleaded o-uilty, and was fined £2, wtih costs 75.. " . '
