Tli9 veteran cricketer, George Moore, of New South Wales, celebrated his 94th birthday last. week. Despite his great age he says he is fit and well. Moore took part in the match, H. H. Stephenson's Englisb. Eleven v. Combined Australian Twenty-two in February, 1862, when the Australians won by 12 wickets. He captured ten of the wickets for an average less than, six per wicket. In another match against the Englishmen his analysis was 128 balls, 15 maidens, 30 runs, 7 wickets. His last match was played in 1895. One of his grandsons, C. G. Macartney, of Gordon, is a conspicuous figure in international cricket.

An amusing account of his first expriences of country life in New Zealand was given by the Rev. A. M. Johnson at the eocial gathering held at Wellington to wish him bon voyage, in view of his approaching visit to England. Mr Johnson said it seemed as if the whole township had turned out to witness his first attempt to. harness a horse, and he did not know how he escaped being killed. On another occasion horse, trap, and 'himself we? 1* clean over a bank. At this" stage Mr. Johnson turned to the Bishop of Wellington (Dr. Sprott), who presided over thp gathering, and asked him if he (Mr Johnson) had ever taken him out for a drive. The Bishop said no, but did not seem in the least offended at the neglect, and made some laughing remark, probably to. the effect that he owed his life to this thoughtful oversight on Mr Johnson's part.— "Dominion."

A meeting of the executive of the Cliittenden Assistance Fund was held last evening. A letter was received from a sympathiser in-Motueka wishing the fund success and enclosing a donation. A substantial donation was also received from the Wanganui'branch of the Amalgamated Society,, of Carpenters and Joiners. It was resolved that the guessing competition for Mr. G. A. Day's birthday cake close on Saturday, May sth, at 8 p.m^ and that tlie executive meet immediately after to check the tickets.

Commencing the Ist pros., all weekend cables are to be telegraphed throughout the whole route, instead of being posted to the cable stations. Week-end cables to Great Britain by either tho "Eastern" or "Pacific" routes will be ninepence per word, with a minimum charge of fifteen shillings for twenty words. Week-end messages "via iEasttern" are also accept^ for the Union of South' Africa at eightpence per word, with a- minimum charge of thirteen shillings and fourpence for twenty words.
